Concord Living

An award-winning city, Concord has received much recognition for its constant efforts to improve the quality of life for its many residents. From its beautified street medians to its butterfly garden at Newhall Park built in cooperation with local alternative high schools and the Lindsay Wildlife Museum Concord is dedicated to providing a well-maintained and attractive place to live.

The city hosts many exciting annual events for the whole family to enjoy. The Bay Area KidFest the oldest and largest children's event in the region is held each year over Memorial Day weekend. Breakfast with Santa, the Children's Harvest Festival, Concord Fall Fest, the Easter Egg Hunt and Brunch and the Halloween Parade are other annual Concord traditions.

There are more than two dozen shopping centers conveniently located throughout the city, ranging from malls with large, nationally recognized chain stores to neighborhood plazas with specialty shops. Sun Valley Mall is a large, modern regional retail center that features 130 stores. Works of modern art accentuate The Willows, a beautifully landscaped outdoor mall. The recently renovated Park and Shop Center, located in the heart of Concord and home to more than 50 businesses, is one of the oldest shopping centers in the area.

Concord boasts a first-class education system including a branch campus of California State University at Hayward called Contra Costa Center. Late afternoon and evening classes in business, education and liberal arts are offered, serving a diverse mix of students.

The recently renovated and upgraded Concord Pavilion is the place to enjoy quality entertainment: headliners in country, rock, jazz, pop and classical perform during the summer months.

There are dozens of historically significant buildings in downtown Concord. Many of the buildings date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While some remain private residences, many have been restored and are used as office or commercial buildings. A stroll through the downtown area, with the green oasis of Todos Santos Plaza at its heart, provides a sense of the rich cultural and architectural heritage left behind by the city's founding families. Todos Santos Plaza, a reminder of Concord's original name, was dedicated in 1868 by city founders Don Salvio Pacheco, Don Fernando Pacheco and Don Francisco Galindo. Designed to be a public square, the plaza encompasses one of the town's original 20 blocks and continues to serve as the site for local celebrations, concerts, carnivals and festivals. The 1993-94-renovation project was the square's seventh major renovation.
